{2063A068-2AF6-41DE-BA30-3BDC85A87FA6} en NWT CIMP nwtcimp@gov.nt.ca pointOfContact 2026-04-23 ISO 19139/19115 Metadata for Datasets 2003 2024-25 - Update: Exploring co-development of a decision making framework - 2025 Dolly Varden working groups - Presentation - CIMP235 2025-03-31 publication The purposes of this project are to: document Indigenous Knowledge of population trends, environmental changes, and cumulative impacts for Dolly Varden and their habitats; establish community-based objectives for the Dolly Varden Fishery; determine community-based fishery reference points; and evaluate reference points against objectives. This work involved a great deal of in-person time and relationship-building with community members and harvesters. The communities were extremely welcoming and allowed us to participate in numerous aspects of the fisheries, for which we are grateful. To date, participants have noted numerous changes to the habitat, fish, and fishery. There has been a decline in sea ice, which affects how close fish come to shore and how to access them. Summer water temperatures are warmer, which sometimes leads to loss of flesh quality or the need to check nets more often, which reduces net soak times. Land is slumping along rivers and along the coast, which affects water clarity and routes taken by fish and harvesters. These changes compound when considering increasing cost of getting out on the land. Objectives for the fishery include leaving lots of fish in the water, ensuring fishing opportunities for future generations, and providing fish for yourself, your family, and your community. These findings help understand how changes experienced by fishers may be contributing to changes in fish abundance but also access to fish. We have not yet developed reference points. However, we have finalized an assessment model fit to the various data collected by community fishery monitors. This model will be used to evaluate the long-term performance of different reference points and voluntary harvest rules.
