Abstract: Snow and glacier runoff serve as important conduits for carrying materials downstream. Within meltwater, dissolved carbon and suspended material are understudied in the High Arctic with respect to meltwater source. Meltwater samples will be taken from locations within the Wolf Creek Basin and the Expedition River Basin on Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut, Canada (79° 24’ 55’’ N, 90° 42’ 35 W). Meltwater sources from Wolf Creek Basin are primarily derived from snowmelt and the small (<5 km²) Crown Glacier. Stream samples were collected using amber High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) sampling bottles, and stored frozen and returned to Queen’s University. Prior to analyses samples were thawed in a refrigerator over approximately 48 hours. After thawing, samples for total dissolved carbon and total dissolved nitrogen analyses were vacuum filtered in the laboratory using a glass filtration apparatus and precombusted 0.7 μm GF/F glass fibre filters. The samples were then stored refrigerated in amber glass EPA vials with no headspace. DOC concentrations were measured as non-purgeable organic carbon (NPOC), while total Carbon (TC) was measured by acidification with HCl, by high temperature combustion (720°C) with a Shimadzu TOC-L analyser. TDN concentrations were measured as nitrogen monoxide via thermal decomposition, using the total nitrogen module (TNM-L) in line with the TOC-L. Samples for ion analyses were vacuum filtered in the laboratory using 0.2 PVDF membrane and vacuum filtration apparatus. The samples were then stored refrigerated in HDPE scintillation vials with no headspace. Major anions (Cl-, Br-, NO2-, NO3-, SO42-, PO43-) and cations (Na+, K+, NH4+, Mg2+, Ca2+) were measured using an ICS-5000 Thermo Scientific liquid ion chromatography system.
Purpose: Stream water samples were collected in the 2019 near Expedition Fiord, Axel Heiberg Island, NU in the summer of 2019 in order to investigate dissolved carbon, dissolved ions, and suspended sediment concentrations in snowmelt runoff and glacial meltwater. In 2019, samples were collected from 11 locations within the Wolf River Basin. This study seeks to characterize the concentration of dissolved and suspended material across streams with varying geology and contributions from snow and glacier runoff.
