Abstract:
Water samples were collected using a CTD rosette at 16 stations in Barrow Strait/Lancaster Sound, northern Baffin Bay and the North Water Polynya. For the profiles, samples were transferred to serum vials, poisoned with HgCl2 and sealed with gas-tight crimp caps. For the incubations, samples were transferred to serum vials, nutrients (NH4Cl or KNO3) and inhibitor (allylthiourea) were added and the vials were sealed with gas-tight crimp caps. Incubations were performed for up to 36h in coolers filled with sea water at in situ temperature. Samples were then poisoned with HgCl2 and sealed with gas-tight crimp caps. Analysis was performed using a gas chromatograph equipped with a PFPD (pulsed flame photometric detector) operating in nitrogen mode.
Purpose:
The main objective of the Arctic SOLAS programme was « to determine how variability in sea ice and water masses in the Arctic influences the ocean-ice-atmosphere exchanges of climate-active gases and particles and the chemical and radiative properties of the Arctic atmosphere.» As part of this main programme, the 2008 N2O project aimed to determine the horizontal and vertical distribution of N2O in the eastern Canadian Arctic and evaluate the magnitude of the source and/or sink of this greenhouse gas in the region. The second main objective was to identify the mechanism responsible for N2O production in surface waters.
