Abstract: Climate Change Adaptation in the Salish Sea Region involved detailing the possible scenarios and projections for climate change in the Salish Sea region, and determining the possible impacts on the Semiahmoo First Nation's lands, resources, and infrastructure. The project involved developing a Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan for the community to enhance sustainability and adaptive capacity. A steering committee with representatives from project partners and the community guided and advised a project team of 6 individuals with various expertise. This team assessed the Nation's vulnerabilities and adaptive capabilities, built capacity within the Nation, provided the Nation with adaptation and mitigation strategies, and maintained community engagement throughout the project. The vulnerability assessment was a multi-step process which included compiling an environmental history, conducting an infrastructure assessment, a land evaluation, a sensitivity evaluation, and creating supporting maps. The Nation's primary areas of vulnerability, capacity requirements, and priority impacts and actions were identified with respect to community infrastructure. These primary areas were water supply, sewage disposal, shoreline integrity, building integrity, community preparedness, food security, and public health.
Purpose: The Semiahmoo First Nation, as a water-based/foreshore culture, is susceptible to the potential impacts of climate change to their land/foreshore, infrastructure, natural resources, and cultural resources. There is a need to assess how climate change may impact the Nation's assets including natural resources, traditional foods and medicines, as well as their economic and social sustainability. The project would develop a Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan for the community for the purpose of enhancing sustainability and adaptive capacity.
