Abstract:
Ship tracks were reconstructed based on observed transits through the Northern Canada Vessel Traffic Services Zone (NORDREG) from 1990 to 2015 using a Least Cost Pathway (LCP) approach. The dataset is based on the daily positional data that has been reported to the Canadian Coast Guard by vessels traveling in the NORDREG zone. Reporting is not mandatory for all vessels, but there is a 98% reported compliance rate. The vessel types were re-classified based on Arctic Marine Shipping Assessment (AMSA) vessel classification categories (Bulk carriers, Fishing Vessels, General Cargo, Government Vessels and Icebreakers, Oil/Gas Exploration/Exploitation, Passenger Ships, Pleasure Crafts, Tanker Ships, and Tug/Barges). A single voyage was determined as each time a single vessel entered and exited the NORDREG zone. The weighted cost surface was generated based on a scale of 0 for least impedance to vessels to 100 for most. The criterion used were: sea ice concentration, bathymetry, and distance from land. See: Pizzolato, L. Howell, S.E.L., Dawson, J. Laliberté, F., Copland, L (2016). The influence of declining sea ice in on shipping activity in the Canadian Arctic. Geophysical Research Letters. 43: 12,146-12,154 doi:10.1002/2016GL071489 for description of methods.
Purpose:
The dataset was developed with the purpose of understanding temporal and spatial trends in ship traffic in the Canadian Arctic and to investigate the potential relationship between declining sea ice coverage in the Canadian Arctic and increasing ship traffic.
