Data Identification
Abstract: Sediment cores were collected from different depths throughout Lake Hazen (44, 50, 150, 260 m). Some cores were sectioned the day they were collected and immediately frozen on-site while others were stabilized and kept intact. Core subportions were then dated using 210Pb and 137Cs profiling to determine the age over the past 150 years. One intact core was scanned for element composition, as well as analyzed for changes in algal community over time. Then final cores were analyzed for a wide range of contaminants (PDBs, legacy POPs and BFRs, PFCs, mercury, and multi-elements such as lead, cadmium and aluminum). In 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 microprobes were used to create biogeochemical profiles of the sediments and cores were sectioned for analysis of active microbial communities.
Purpose: Due to climate change there is significant increase in glacial melt in Lake Hazen watershed which results in significant increases in inputs of water and sediments to the lake. These changes are altering water quality and biogeochemical processes in Lake Hazen. The goal of this study is to collect and analyze sediment cores from throughout Lake Hazen for various biogeochemical processes. These cores will provide a long-term record of environmental change such as trends in long-range atmospheric transport and deposition of contaminants, rates of glacial melt in the Lake Hazen watershed, and changes in algal community composition over time in Lake Hazen.
