Data Identification
Abstract: The scope of the project was to identify and monitor changes associated with permafrost in Arviat, Baker Lake, Kimmirut, Gjoa Haven, Cape Dorset and Kugluktuk for the purpose of assessing the respective terrains in regards to their various soil, permafrost and drainage conditions. 3V Geomatics acquired and processed Radarsat images. They also conducted community site inspections. Based on the data and information obtained, the respective terrains were ranked as to their suitability for future development. The information could then be incorporated into their adaptation plans and used in preparation of the community plans which identify development for the next 20 years. This project supported the transfer of knowledge to the communities providing them with tools and policies to assist them in the better management of their land. This project was a continuation of the Enhancing Adaptive Capacity of Climate Change that took place in 2010-11 in which studies were conducted for 14 Nunavut communities.
Purpose: The project would enable the Government of Nunavut and Hamlets of Nunavut to acquire knowledge about site conditions by conducting a terrain analysis in six communities. This information would be used by planners and engineers to assist the communities in the decision-making process of selecting safe, secure, and stable sites for future development.
