Abstract: Nine oral history interviews were conducted in Resolute Bay, Nunavut in May and June of 2012 in consultation with the Hamlet of Resolute Bay. Interviews were approximately 20 to 40 minutes in length and researchers audio-recorded each interview. Eight of these interviews were then transcribed by researchers. Eight of these interviews are in the process of being housed in the Hamlet of Resolute Bay Office, or another appropriate housing facility, as will be decided in consultation with the Resolute Hamlet Office. After the selection of housing site, the interviews may be accessed by contacting the Resolute Hamlet Office or choice housing site. Such details will be updated once housing of interviews is completed. A list of interviews can be obtained from the originator.
Purpose: This collection of oral history interviews was generated to fulfill two key goals of the project: ¿ to assess the social, environmental, and economic impacts of mineral development of the Polaris lead-zinc mine, Little Cornwallis Island, in the Inuit community of Resolute; ¿ to assess and analyze the historical memories of communities in relation to large scale industrialization and de-industrialization associated with large scale mineral projects. The Polaris lead-zinc mine was operated by Cominco Ltd. on Little Cornwallis Island from 1982-2002 as one of the first long distance commuting mines in the former Northwest Territories, and one of the very few historical large-scale mining projects in present-day Nunavut. Researchers conducted oral history interviews with former Inuit Polaris workers and Resolute community members to assess the social, environmental, and economic impact of large scale industrial mining on the community of Resolute. The interviews include information about Resolute Inuit memories, perceptions, and attitudes about the Polaris operation; personal experiences working at the mine; and memory of the consultation process between the community and Cominco. The oral history interviews in this project were accomplished between May and June of 2012 in Resolute Bay, in collaboration with the Resolute Hamlet Office.
