Data Identification
Abstract: The data were collected using interviews and focus groups during the summer of 2011. A total of 52 residents of varying ages, employment histories, and personal histories contributed to the data collection.
Purpose: With the development of the Meadowbank gold mine, the people of Baker Lake, Nunavut have experienced a dramatic shift in the economic make-up of their community. Mining development has impacted many aspects of community life, some positively and some negatively, though it is also clear that individual experiences with these impacts have varied greatly. The data were collected, at the request of the Hamlet Council of Baker Lake, to create an objective picture of how the Hamlet of Baker Lake is experiencing mining at the nearby Meadowbank Gold Mine. Once collected, the data were also used to understand how mining was impacting the community's adaptive capacity to manage climate change.
