Abstract:
Arctic Alaska soil climate; since 1995 and continuing. Nine solar powered, soil climate research stations are maintained annually. Active layer and near-surface permafrost are instrumented to 120 cm at: Barrow since 1995-6 (2 sites); Atqasuk (1 site1996); West Dock (2 sites 2001); Betty Pingo (1); Sagwon (2 sites, 1996) and Toolik (1 site 1998). Stations monitor soil temperature at various depths to a maximum of 120 cm, and soil water content at 5, 20, and 35 cm depths. Measurements are made at 20-minute intervals and averaged and recorded every hour.
Purpose:
A soil survey is a resource inventory where field scientists collect, organize, and interpret information about the natural resources in an area. Although the main focus is on soils, data is also collected on vegetation, landforms, and surface hydrology. Soil surveys help landowners and communities select the best sites for homes, schools, airfields, roads, landfills, and agriculture. They provide a scientific inventory of soil resources for making maps, identifying physical and chemical properties of soils, as well as supplying current information on potential uses and limitations of each soil.
