Data Identification
Abstract:
The vulnerability and risk assessment of the territory planned for phase 1 of the project consists of six operations. The first is to host a number of meetings and gatherings with community members and the Chief and Council to present the project and collect information. The second operation is to compile community-based good practices for vulnerability and risk assessments and integrate it into the community's assessment methodology. The third is to collect and interpret future climate change model data including regional downscaling climate models. The fourth operation is to create a guideline of traditional cultural data which includes existing cultural uses, interviews on changes of food harvest and natural disturbance events. The fifth is to combine climate science and cultural data to assess vulnerability and risk to future climate changes. This will be achieved with the identification of the impacts on the community's economy and infrastructure, their priorities, and their resilience. The last operation is to complete the assessment by identifying risks, resilience and long-term climate change for the community.
Purpose:
The project focuses on three specific areas that are linked to climate change. The first is food security which has been identified as a concern, especially because climate change can affect the traditional diet which is part of maintaining a healthy community. The second is extreme weather events which are impacting the land with growing frequency, especially on the territory where previous industrial activities haves left the land more vulnerable to erosion and flooding. The third area of focus is emergency management which will permit the community to better prepare to the impacts of climate change.
