Data Identification
Abstract: Two peat cores were collected from the Daigle Lake catchment and one peat core was collected from the Handle Lake catchment. Surrounding vegetation and the active layer was characterised. Cores were subsampled for various analyses: chronology (14C), bulk density, testate amoebae, geochemical (ICP-MS, Arsenic speciation), pollen, rock eval and plant macrofossils. The results will inform us on the paleoenvironmental and paleoclimate history of the region and how these impact metals of concern (i.e. As) in peatlands. Results will be compared to that of nearby lake sediment studies.
Purpose: The Northwest Territories has naturally high occurring concentrations of Arsenic as well as a legacy of gold mining that has contributed to additional loading in the environment. The fate of Arsenic after deposition as well as the impact of past climate variability on Arsenic in peat cores is the focus of this research.
